A consequence of the federal government shutdown is the lapse in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food assistance to low-income families. Thousands of New Jersey residents will be impacted by this, and at the same time, New Jersey has joined 19 other states in suing the Trump Administration over the issue. Bergen County has many local organizations dedicated to helping the community. <em>The Bergen County Girl<\/em> compiled this list of resources for families to find support, and for neighbors who want to contribute. <\/span><b>Read on to find resources in Bergen County.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Editor&#8217;s note: <\/em><\/strong><em>We will add to this list as it grows. Please contact <a href=\"mailto:hello@thelocalgirl.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hello@thelocalgirl.com<\/a> for any additions or updates.\u00a0<\/em><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-230164\" src=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/Featured-Image-TEMPLATE-800x533.png\" alt=\"food resources for bergen county\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/Featured-Image-TEMPLATE-800x533.png 800w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/Featured-Image-TEMPLATE-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/Featured-Image-TEMPLATE-585x390.png 585w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/Featured-Image-TEMPLATE-263x175.png 263w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/Featured-Image-TEMPLATE.png 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benefits are a monthly food assistance program funded by the federal government, aiming to alleviate the impacts of food insecurity for qualifying low-income households.\u00a0 The US Department of Agriculture does not have a budget for fiscal year 2026, and has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it will not use emergency funding to bridge the gap. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/humanservices\/njsnap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NJ SNAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> website, benefits are provided through a card that can be used at most grocery stores and some farmers&#8217; markets. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/humanservices\/dfd\/emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NJ SNAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has released a statement regarding the suspension of federal funding, noting that recipients with remaining benefits on their Families First EBT cards from the month of October may use those benefits in November. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/governor\/news\/news\/562025\/approved\/20251025a.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> statement <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, more than 800,00 New Jersey residents receive SNAP benefits. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/humanservices\/dfd\/news\/reports\/pdf\/cps\/2025\/CPS_August2025.pdf\">report<\/a> from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, as of August 2025, 25,494 households, 28,700 adults, and 13,894 children received SNAP benefits in Bergen County. Per the same report, Bergen County saw a 1.1 percent increase in SNAP participation. The increase could be due to a variety of factors, including changing economic factors, program outreach, and changes in eligibility. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.njoag.gov\/attorney-general-platkin-sues-trump-administration-for-illegally-suspending-snap-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of several states suing the Trump Administration over the lapse in benefits, joining a coalition of 22 other attorneys general, three governors, and the District of Columbia. \u201cNew Jersey families are being used as political pawns by the Trump Administration, which is illegally suspending SNAP and the critical assistance it provides to residents who are struggling with food insecurity,\u201d said Attorney General Platkin. \u201cThis is especially devastating in the month of November, when families are gathering and demands on food banks and pantries are heaviest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As winter and the holiday season approach, the need at local pantries and shelters is especially high. With individuals and families around the state set to lose food-assistance benefits, the demand is even higher. For those experiencing food insecurity, <em>TLG<\/em> has assembled a list of resources throughout the state. For those in the position to donate, that information is included as well.<\/p>\n<p>On October 30th, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/governor\/news\/news\/562025\/approved\/20251030b.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> an effort to fund statewide food banks with an additional $4.25 million to bridge the gap in SNAP funding. \u201cFood security work is intentionally broader in the 21st Century because the challenges that existing systems and practices place on people, interconnect,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Office of the Food Security Executive Director Mark Dinglasan<\/strong>. \u201cStill, the reality is the day-to-day work of food banks and food pantries, including the six Food &amp; Hunger grantees and their networks of local agencies, is very much needed in every community and each of our 21 counties. The collaborative way in which our colleagues across the Governor&#8217;s office, state agencies and partners in the Legislature have expedited these funding disbursements is a testament to how the state cares for all New Jerseyans&#8217; well-being.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Statewide Resources<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cfbnj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Community FoodBank of New Jersey<\/a> &#8211; Across the state, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey has a searchable directory where you can enter your ZIP code to find the nearest pantries and meal programs.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nj211.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">211 New Jersey<\/a> is a free, confidential resource to connect residents to nonprofits, government agencies, and other groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Bergen County Resources<\/h3>\n<p>The Bergen County Office of Food Security offers an interactive <a href=\"https:\/\/bergenfightshunger.org\/food-pantry-finder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Pantry Finder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing residents to locate their nearest food provider. Each entry includes contact information, hours of operation, and a link to the designated pantry&#8217;s website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a list of (just some) food pantry locations in Bergen County provided by the Bergen County Office of Food Security.
