Some claim that after circling the tower a specific number of times, a ghost will appear. The space is officially known as Rio Vista and was built in 1910 by millionaire sugar importer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/192530285\/manuel-rionda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manuel Rionda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a 300-acre estate. The tower was built as a tribute to his wife, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/192530338\/harriet-rionda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harriet Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Local lore claims that Harriet leapt to her death after discovering her husband with another woman and that her spirit haunts the area to this day. However, this is just a legend since Harriet actually passed away in 1922.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Easton Tower<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constructed around 1900, Paramus\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hauntedplaces.org\/item\/easton-tower-red-mill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easton Tower<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was made of wood and stone. It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was used by the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad Company to get coal from Pennsylvania to the Hudson River waterfront coal docks. The entire passageway stretches from its western entrance beneath the Fairview Cemetery in Fairview to its eastern opening at the foot of the Palisades in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/waterfront-restaurants-edgewater-nj\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgewater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some locals refer to it as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/firefighters-say-teens-rescued-from-flooded-tunnel-in-new-jersey-should-serve-as-cautionary-tale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devil\u2019s Hole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Jersey Dutch<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jersey Dutch, also known as Bergen Dutch, is an extinct language that existed from the late 17th to the early 20th century. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was spoken by the descendants of New Netherlanders who settled in Bergen, New Netherland, as well as the enslaved African-Americans, free people of color, and some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hobokengirl.com\/lenape-namesakes-new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lenape<\/a> who lived in the region. One of the last speakers of the language was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/6037028\/mathew-hicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthew Hicks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Mahwah, a church sexton. He passed away in 1925.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Missile at Campgaw Mountain<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1955, the U.S. Army created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20061208144746\/http:\/\/www.bergencountyhistory.org\/Pages\/nikemissile.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nike Missile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here as part of a strategic operation to defend the New York metropolitan area from bombs. In 1971, the site was closed down.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Outwater Family Cemetery<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cemetery\/2140373\/outwater-family-cemetery?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outwater Family Cemetery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is located in an industrial area of the Meadowlands. A wooden flight of steps alongside a bakery outlet at this site leads to the burial ground. The first of the 26 interments within the family cemetery was in 1752, and the last in 1892. Several members of the family <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journeysintoriveredge.substack.com\/p\/history-in-our-midst-a-mausoleum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were buried here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in 1922, were reinterred at the Valleau Cemetery belonging to the Old Paramus Church in Ridgewood. Although no remains are located beneath the golf course, the remnants of two mausoleum structures are still present and apparent near Holes 12 and 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Roberge Elementary School<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ghostandsouls.wordpress.com\/2009\/02\/03\/list-of-haunted-places-in-new-jersey\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local legend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in River Vale believes that one of the community\u2019s elementary schools is haunted by a friendly janitor who died of a heart attack. Apparently, he is heard sweeping hallway and bathroom floors, and when he is present, one will hear laughter out of nowhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Sautjes Tave\u2019s Begraven Ground Cemetery<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sautjes Tave\u2019s Begraven Ground Cemetery is nestled in the middle of a suburban neighborhood in Demarest. It is surrounded by a quiet road and suburban homes. This early Dutch family burial ground was originally on the edge of a family estate. A notable burial is Douwe Talema, a 89-year-old man who was brutally murdered by British Loyalists during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/historical-homes-bergen-county-nj\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Revolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was bayoneted and died two days later.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Spook Crossing<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Sigmund H. Uminski, there is a haunted spot called River Edge visited by Revolutionary War soldiers. On Howland Avenue, there is a small brook just west of Cleveland Place. Known as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journeysintoriveredge.substack.com\/p\/haunted-spots-around-town\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spook Crossing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d it was said to be haunted by the ghosts of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolutionary War<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> soldiers who died from poisoned cider.
