Five aftershocks were felt on July 21st and 22nd in the surrounding areas. No damage was reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/earthquake-bergen-county-new-jersey-january-2025\/\">2.4 Magnitude Earthquake Felt in Bergen County, New Jersey Friday Afternoon<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On August 3rd, 2025, another earthquake <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/08\/02\/nyregion\/new-jersey-earthquake.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This one was a 3.0 magnitude and it originated in <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/bergen\/earthquake-bergen-county-new-jersey-january-2025\/\">Hasbrouck Heights<\/a>. This quake was felt by residents throughout Northern New Jersey and New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another quake was reported on August 5th, 2025. Per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/us6000qycw\/executive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Geological Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was a magnitude 2.7 earthquake originating near Hillsdale, New Jersey. Most likely, this is an aftershock related to the August 3rd event.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s Happening?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern New Jersey is the location of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eps.rutgers.edu\/research\/virtual-geo\/projects\/geology-of-the-newark-rift-basin\/1344-nj-geology-ramapo-fault\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramapo Fault<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a geological fault line that stretches over 180 miles long from New York through New Jersey to Pennsylvania. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/what-relationship-between-faults-and-earthquakes-what-happens-a-fault-when-earthquake-occurs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fault<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a fracture between two rocks, and movement between the rocks is what causes an earthquake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to researchers from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.columbia.edu\/news\/2004\/story04-30-04b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cEarthquake epicenters in the region [Northern New Jersey + New York], although scattered, generally follow a southwest-to-northeast trend from eastern Pennsylvania, through New Jersey, and into the Hudson Highlands in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam Counties. Although the epicenters are scattered, the seismicity patterns appear to be concentrated along several geologic features, including the Ramapo Fault System.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists aren\u2019t certain if each of the three summer quakes is connected to the Ramapo Fault yet.
